With the tranÂsiÂtion from reÂpubÂliÂcan to imÂpeÂriÂal Rome, nuÂmerÂous monÂuÂments were erectÂed to the DiÂvine CaeÂsar. WithÂin a much shortÂer time than marked the growth of the imÂpeÂriÂal traÂdiÂtion in AmerÂiÂca, a simÂiÂlar edÂiÂfiÂcaÂtion of paÂtriÂotÂic memÂoÂries took place.
In the restoraÂtion of the origÂiÂnal plan of WashÂingÂton, which beÂgan in 1901, the axÂis of the plan was so alÂtered as to make it pass through the WashÂingÂton MonÂuÂment; and at the same time the place of the LinÂcoln MemoÂriÂal, deÂsigned by the late Mr. HenÂry BaÂcon, a pupil of Mr. McKimâs, was asÂsigned. This was the first of a whole seÂries of temÂples deÂvotÂed to the naÂtionÂal deities. In the LinÂcoln MemoÂriÂal, in the McKinÂley MemoÂriÂal at Niles, Ohio, in the Hall of Fame at New York UniÂverÂsiÂty, and in their proÂtoÂtype, Grantâs Tomb, one feels not the livÂing beauÂty of our AmerÂiÂcan past, but the morÂtuÂary air of arÂchaeÂolÂoÂgy. The AmerÂiÂca that LinÂcoln was bred in, the homeÂspun and huÂmane and huÂmorÂous AmerÂiÂca that he wished to preÂserve, has nothÂing in comÂmon with the sedÂuÂlousÂly clasÂsic monÂuÂment that was erectÂed to his memÂoÂry. Who lives in that shrine, I wonÂderâLinÂcoln, or the men who conÂceived it: the leadÂer who beÂheld the mournÂful vicÂtoÂry of the CivÂil War, or the genÂerÂaÂtion that took pleaÂsure in the mean triÂumph of the SpanÂish-AmerÂiÂcan exÂploit, and placed the imÂpeÂriÂal stanÂdard in the PhilipÂpines and the CarÂibÂbean?
On the plane of priÂvate citÂiÂzenÂship, a simÂiÂlar moveÂment took place: while beÂfore 1890 one can count the tombs in our cemeÂterÂies that boast loudÂly of the ownÂerâs earthÂly posÂsesÂsions and powÂer, from that time onÂward the miniaÂture temÂple-mauÂsoleum beÂcomes more and more freÂquent. In fact, an enÂtire hisÂtoÂry of arÂchiÂtecÂture could be deÂduced from our cemeÂterÂies; all that has so far been deÂscribed could be marked in the progress from the simÂple slab, carved in alÂmost AtÂtic puÂriÂty with a weepÂing wilÂlow or a cuÂbisÂtic cherub, that charÂacÂterÂized the eighÂteenth cenÂtuÂry, to the bad letÂterÂing and the more awkÂward headÂstones of the earÂly nineÂteenth cenÂtuÂry; and from this to the inÂtroÂducÂtion of polÂished granÂite and iron orÂnaÂment in the post-CivÂil War cemeÂtery, down to the meÂchanÂiÂcalÂly perÂfect mauÂsoleum, where the corpses are packed like the ocÂcuÂpants of a subÂway train, that some of our more efÂfuÂsiveÂly proÂgresÂsive comÂmuÂniÂties boast of toÂday. As we live, so we die: no wonÂder ShelÂley deÂscribed Hell as a place much like LonÂdon.
The RoÂman deÂvelÂopÂment of New York, ChicaÂgo, WashÂingÂton, and the lessÂer meÂtropÂoÂlises, had an imÂporÂtant efÂfect upÂon the homes of the peoÂple. HisÂtorÂiÂcalÂly, the imÂpeÂriÂal monÂuÂment and the slum-tenÂeÂment go hand in hand. The same process that creÂates an unÂearned inÂcreÂment for the landÂlords who posÂsess faÂvored sites, conÂtribÂutes a genÂerÂous quoÂtaâwhich might be called the unÂearned exÂcreÂmentâof deÂpresÂsion, overÂcrowdÂing, and bad livÂing, in the dorÂmiÂtoÂry disÂtricts of the city. This had hapÂpened in imÂpeÂriÂal Rome; it had hapÂpened again in Paris unÂder Napoleon III, where HaussÂmannâs sweepÂing reÂconÂstrucÂtions creÂatÂed new slums in the disÂtricts beÂhind the grand avÂenues, quite
